Squamscott River Academy, a part of Mount Prospect Academy, Inc., is a therapeutic school that understands how difficult it can be for a child to learn and perform in an academic setting if they are preoccupied with underlying emotional or mental health needs. We seek to treat the underlying factors that have led to the development of avoidant or disruptive behaviors through our model of embedded therapeutic support services, and by fostering a safe and supportive environment.
Our teachers provide competency-based instruction, and they employ innovative strategies to help non-traditional students learn while being supported by trained mental health professionals. We offer academic support services for individualized learning, and our students have full access to the general education curriculum, as outlined in the New Hampshire curriculum standards.
Academic engagement is an essential component in our treatment plans, and each student’s family, sending district and other sending agencies is considered a key stakeholder in all planning efforts. Our students are enrolled in the appropriate academic classes as defined by their sending school district’s graduation requirements and Squamscott River Academy’s (SRA) recommendations. SRA also awards graduates with a high school diploma that meets the New Hampshire state minimum standards.
SRA continuously works to enhance its curriculum by developing the Extended Learning Opportunities program. This practice allows students to earn high school credits while exploring new academic subjects that interest them. We are also moving toward developing personalized learning plans for all students.
Squamscott River Academy uses many options and modalities, to promote behavioral change and emotional growth, by employing principles of applied behavioral analysis, clinical models and interventions including: EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), ARC (Attachment, Regulation and Competency), Therapeutic Recreation, as well as individual and group counseling.
